What is Allergic Conjunctivitis?
Allergic conjunctivitis, or eye allergies, is common for people with allergies. It happens when the conjunctiva (the white part of your eye) gets inflamed. It is caused by an allergic reaction to dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, etc.
With allergic conjunctivitis, your eyes can feel very itchy, making you want to rub them. They might also become red, and watery, and produce more mucus than usual. Your eyelids may also swell.
When you have eye allergies, it’s also common to have other allergy symptoms, like sneezing and a runny nose.
It’s important not to confuse allergic conjunctivitis with pink eye, another common form of conjunctivitis. While the symptoms may seem similar, the causes and the risk of spreading are very different between the two.
What are the Symptoms of Allergic Conjunctivitis?
- Itchy or burning sensation in the eyes
- Watery eyes
- Redness or swelling around the eyes
- Other symptoms may include frequent sneezing, a runny nose, or a scratchy throat.

Home Care and Precautions for Allergic Conjunctivitis
- Wash your hands often, especially before touching your eyes and handling your pets.
- Avoid sharing towels
- Avoid wearing contact lenses until your doctor calls it safe
- Try a warm or cold compress for a few minutes for temporary relief
- Don’t rub your eyes
- You can use artificial tears or OTC saline eye drops
- Wear a hat and sunglasses to get some protection from pollen
How You Can Prevent Allergic Conjunctivitis?
- Minimize your exposure to environmental triggers.
- Use fragrance-free soaps and detergents
- Get an air purifier installed in your home
- Regularly clean your home to reduce dust and pollen
- Keep pets out of your bedroom
How is Allergic Conjunctivitis Treated?
The first treatment for allergic conjunctivitis is usually eye drops containing antihistamines or mast cell stabilizers, such as Pataday, Elestat, Bepreve, or Zaditor. If symptoms are more severe, your doctor may prescribe a short course of steroid eye drops or oral antihistamines. Ideally, avoiding the allergen or seeing an allergist for desensitization is the best approach.
For patients with Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis, taking a break from contact lenses is often recommended, along with antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer eye drops, or steroids.
Those with Vernal Conjunctivitis or Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis may benefit from immunosuppressive treatments like Cyclosporine, either locally or systemically.
